Copy Editing
A copy edit comes after a line edit and before a proofread. This is another layer of polishing that cleans up anything left that is clunky, awkward, grammatically incorrect, misspelled, improperly punctuated, etc. But what really sets copy editing apart in the editing process is its function as the gatekeeper for consistency within a written work.
A copy editor will not only clean up the “copy,” but will also establish a style sheet. This style sheet tracks characters, titles, settings, special grammar, punctuation, capitalization choices to make sure they are consistent throughout the entire piece. This style sheet will then be passed on to the proofreader who will reference it and make sure all proofreading corrections are in line with the style sheet.
This step is vital to a clean written work that allows the reader to be immersed in the story or information provided without distractions within the text.
