Line Editing
Line editing is the second step in the professional editing process. It comes after a developmental edit and before a copy edit.
As the name suggests, a line editor combs a given text line-by-line, polishing the language so it’s ultimately as effective as it can be.
This includes:
Flagging awkward or clunky phrases
Tightening wordy passages
Recommending word choices that best demonstrate the writer’s overall voice and tone
Eliminating gaps in sentences/passages/transitions that would confuse the reader
Line editing does not include:
Big-picture critiques
Major restructuring of story beats
Character development or plot holes
Copy editing or proofreading
(Note: There is some overlap with line editing and copy editing. Your draft will inevitably be much cleaner after a line edit, but it is not a full copy edit.)
Ultimately, a line edit will make your prose shine brighter and have greater impact than it did before. This is secretly my favorite step in editing! The before and afters are so satisfying for both writer and editor!
