Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is the first step in the professional editing process. It comes after your first draft has been completed and revised at least once, and before a line edit.

In developmental editing, I approach the manuscript/WIP (work in progress) from a macro level. I will look at your plot, pacing, character development, and overall story structure, and offer both praise and suggestions.

What’s included:

  • In-text comments with both specific and broad recommendations for improvement

  • An editorial letter that will give an overview of my perspective on the manuscript, including key areas of strength and key areas that good use an upgrade.

  • The ability for you as the author to converse with me about ideas for improvement and/or clarity on my comments and suggestions

What’s
not included:

  • Line editing

  • Copy editing

  • Proofreading

As with all of my editing services, I am merely a collaborator with you, the author. You can accept or reject any of my recommendations; you have the final say. My goal is to help you refine your manuscript into the best version it can be, staying true to your voice and your vision for it.

Timeline

The time it takes me to complete a developmental edit depends on several factors, like the word count, the depth of feedback it requires, and my workload at the time. If you have a specific deadline you’d like to work within, please include that in your rate request. I will always do my best to accommodate you!
